I work at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology of the Free University, Amsterdam, where I teach courses on the information society and ethnicity. In 1997 I conducted research among Turkish families as well as Moroccan and Turkish runaway girls in the Netherlands. From 1998 to 2000 I coordinated a project that integrated information and communication technologies (ICTs) into the teaching and learning of anthropology at the Free University. During that project I became interested in the numerous websites on Islam to be found on the Internet (e.g. www.overgave.nl) as well as in websites set up by second-generation Moroccan youths in the Netherlands (www.maroc.nl). I am particularly interested in their on-line discussions surrounding identity formation.
