In 2000, the project Digital Centre was launched in 25 cities across the Netherlands. These computer centres are located in socially deprived urban areas and aim at reducing the digital divide by self-empowering citizens, improving their employability through acquiring new computer skills, and strengthening social cohesion across ethnic lines. Our team member will conduct research in Slotervaart, a multi-ethnic neighbourhood in Amsterdam. Her starting point will be a local Computer Clubhouse, part of a worldwide network sponsored by Intel. These centres are aimed at raising the self-esteem of underprivileged youths through the acquisition of new computer skills (www.computerclubhouse.org).
