| This Southeast Asian case study will assist the comparative aims of the project by providing some sharp contrasts with the European ethnographies (as well as some common issues). One striking contrast is the fact that in Malaysia it is the indigenous population that is felt to be in greater need of state support, including e-government services, than the more affluent ethnic Chinese. Fieldwork will take place in Kuala Lumpur. It will investigate the DAGS (Demonstrator Applications Grant Schemes) initiative, consisting of 41 projects aimed at using ICTS to achieve the national aim of building a Malaysian civil society. These include a 'cyber-mosque', a computer club for poor children, and a family care network for urban parents from all ethnic groups. |
